Presentation of Stonehenge
This is an ancient monument of huge stone standing on the vast Sablisbury plains in England has captured our imaginations for centuries. It’s the most enigmatic pre-historic monument on earth.
What makes the structure at Stonehenge unique is the fact that for the first time they"re shaping stones on a massive scale. Dating back as far as 2950B.C.,theories about who built Stonehenge have included the druids and the Greeks. Speculation as to its purpose, range from astronomy to a UFO landing site.
Now a ruin with many of the original stones fallen or removed, this site Sun attracts nearly five thousand tourists everyday.
Around the same time as the ancient Egyptians were building the pyramids, the first stones arrived here at Stonehenge. The mystery of this stone is that they are only found in the Brescelly Mountains in south Wales, nearly 150 miles away.
It was a huge job to transport these stones from Wales, because originally there were about 80 of them here at Stonehenge weighing up to four tons each. Now, if I got m my car it would take me about five hours to dive all the way to Wales. But to those people, it would"ve been m enormous distance.
The stones were brought by boat from the mountains and pulled from the coast by sledge to the site.
I think you need a minimum of about 150 people, simply to move one of these massive forty-ton stones.
Getting the stones to the site was an amazing feat, but building Stonehenge was much more complex. It is not just simply one stone piled on to top of another, they"re joined together, this hole in the arch on here that"s been pounded out using stone hammers, and that originally fitted on the top of that stone.
After nearly 5,000 years Stonehenge is still standing. We now know how it was built. The question "why" is a bit more problematic. Twenty century followers of ancient mystical beliefs are sure that Stonehenge has a connection with summer and winter solstices. "As a druid, as a priest of the land, I feel Stonehenge to be one of the key sacred temples in the world. Stonehenge evokes in us a connection between some deep ancestral intuitive soul and the power of nature around us."
Nature may well know all the answers, but science has yet to prove its theories. It seems Stonehenge isn"t ready to reveal all its secrets just yet.
Stonehenge——Can anyone explain why it is there?
Stonehenge, a rock circle, is not only one of Britain’s most famous historical places but also one of its greatest mysteries. Every year it receives more than 750,000 visitors. People like to go to this place especially in June as they want to see the sun rising on the longest day of the year.
For many years, historians believed Stonehenge was a temple where ancient leader tried to communicate with the gods. However, historian Paul Stoker thinks this can’t be true because Stonehenge was built so many centuries ago. “The leaders arrived in England much later, ”he points out.
Another popular idea is that Stonehenge might be a kind of calendar. The large stones were put together in a certain way. On midsummer’s morning, the sun shines directly into the center of the stones. Other people believe the stones have a medical purpose. They think the stones can prevent illness and keep people healthy. “As you walk there, you can feel the energy from your feet move up your body,” said one visitor. No one is sure what Stonehenge was used for, but most agree the position of the stones must be for a special purpose. Some think it might be a burial place or a place to honor ancestors. Others think it was built to celebrate a victory over an enemy.
Stonehenge was built slowly over a long period time. Most historians believe it must be almost 5,000 years old. One of the greatest mysteries is how it was built because the stones are so big and heavy. In 2001, a group of English volunteers tired to build another Stonehenge, but they couldn’t. “We don’t really know who built Stonehenge,” says Paul Stoker. “And perhaps we might never know, but we do know they must have been hard-working——and great planners!”
Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire, about 3.2 kilometres (2.0 mi) west of Amesbury and 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) north of Salisbury. One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones. It is at the centre of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.
Archaeologists had believed that the iconic stone monument was erected around 2500 BC, as described in the chronology below. One recent theory, however, has suggested that the first stones were not erected until 2400-2200 BC, whilst another suggests that bluestones may have been erected at the site as early as 3000 BC (see phase 1 below). The surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC. The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986 in a co-listing with Avebury Henge monument. It is a national legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument. Stonehenge is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage, while the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust.
Archaeological evidence found by the Stonehenge Riverside Project in 2008 indicates that Stonehenge served as a burial ground from its earliest beginnings. The dating of cremated remains found on the site indicate burials from as early as 3000 BC, when the initial ditch and bank were first dug. Burials continued at Stonehenge for at least another 500 years.
'Super' Stonehenge Discovered A Short Distance From The Original Monument
Discovered 3-ft underground beneath the Durrington Walls, “Superhenge', that lies about two miles from the original Stonehenge, is the largest stone monument discovery in Europe. The scientist says that ground-penetrating radar images indicate that there may have been of up to 90 stones, 30 of which are still well preserved.
According to the researchers, the massive stones that measure as high as 15-feet in height most likely date back to burial site's inception, about 5,000 years ago. They suspect that the preserved stones may have been knocked over and buried in the soil a century later, during the construction of the Durrington Walls. The ones that did not get buried adequately are either fragmented or have disintegrated completely, leaving behind empty pits where they once stood.
The discovery is the latest in a slew of new finds by the Stonehenge Hidden Landscapes Project, a partnership between the University of Birmingham and the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology. It brings together experts from around the world to research Stonehenge and the surrounding areas. The aim of the four-year project that ends in 2017, is to create an extensive underground 3-D map of the area around Stonehenge to document what is already known and search for what still lies hidden.
Other notable discoveries made possible by the virtual excavation includes 17 new shrine-like structures and a 108-foot long burial mound. These finds have helped researchers realize that Stonehenge was not a monument in isolation, but part of a rich monumental landscape. While it has always been seen as a place of religious significance, these recent developments seem to suggest that the area could have been the birthplace of the idea of ceremonial procession, or a liturgy.
So will this 'Superhenge' displace the original Stonehenge? Probably not, given that the archaeologists have no intention of unearthing the bigger neighbor any time soon!
In Britain where Salisbury "Stonehenge," which means "the rock". These up to six meters of stone pillars and the lintels, between the two column spectacular item set mouth was so hard to stay. For thousands of years the megaliths experience artificial and natural damage, erosion; Still stand out.It with other megaliths have obvious respectively, because it is the only after artificial carve, and its structure is quite delicate. Every stone is also obviously after precision of mathematical calculation, hew to accurately arc, the last to split. The rock group is how form? What is the purpose for? Its origin basically has two, the first is moved to the magic of king of a twenty-five-stringed plucked instrument; The second is a druid DE field of sacrifice. But according to the determination of radioactive carbon pillars of the group of one thousand years earlier than a druid Zoroastrian appear!According to some earlier studies, and points out that the pillars of the group of architects can do only the Roman empire. As opinions vary, in found several prehistoric tomb, near the funerary more numerous. Because these funerary manual fine, not native can do at that time, so the archaeologists inferred rock group is built by immigration. But because from the point of the year of accompany this and there are some unlikely, because the year of manufacture of grave goods than Stonehenge group of late eight hundred. So the construction should be has nothing to do with the foreign culture.
